West Philly Recess Initiative
Weekly on Weekdays
Penn Newman is gathering a group of Penn undergrad and graduate students go together to the West Philadelphia Recess Initiative. This is a subset of Community Schools Student Partnerships (CSSP) operated by the Netter Center. We go during Recess to Wilson (11:30 am – 1:00 pm) and Lea (11:30 – 1:40) elementary Schools to organize games and promote a pleasant lunch/recess experience. By helping them, we are encouraging physical fitness, reducing bullying, and teaching cooperation. We are there Monday-Friday. If you are interested in participating with Newman, please contact Natalie Feigenbaum or Carolyn Miller. Also, you will need to fill out an application on Penn CSSP’s website.
Time Commitment: 2 hours per week (M-F) on site around lunchtime.
Work study, independent study, and research opportunities are all available.

A Day with Don Guanella School Boys
Fall 2009 (Date TBA)
Spring 2010 (Date TBA)
Twice a year we go with boys from the Don Guanella school to a Penn sporting event. Don Guanella is a facility for boys with mental disabilities. These boys live at Don Guanella, but there are other programs for adults as well where they do not live there. In the fall we go to a football game, and in the spring we go to a basketball game. When they come we have dinner/lunch with them and attend Mass. In the past we have been able to sometimes have football/basketball team members come or get free t-shirts.

Empty Bowls
Thursday, November 19, 2009
Penn Newman Center
To develop an increased sensitivity to the issue of both local and world hunger, Penn Newman annually sponsors “Empty Bowls.” A simple meal coupled with information about hunger includes entertainment from various groups on the Penn campus for an informative and enjoyable evening. For only $5, guests got a hot
meal and experienced some great entertainment. All proceeds go directly to UCHC (University City Hospitality Coalition). To help plan this event, contact Stephanie Cipolla or Elizabeth Kopec.
UCHC provides meals and support services for the poor and homeless in University
City. Unfortunately, UCHC receives no city, state, or federal money to support
its programs. It relies mainly on donations from faith-based organizations, the
United Way, and individuals like you.

Operation Santa Claus
December 2009
For Christmas, Penn Newman provides gifts to hundreds of schoolchildren in three West Philly elementary schools. Newman Council members coordinate the logistics and organization of this toy drive. Check back in November 2009 for more info or contact Natalie Feigenbaum or Keara Stewart.

Locks of Love Hair Drive
April 2010 (Date TBA)
Penn Newman Center
Locks of Love is an organization that uses donated hair to create wigs for children who have suffered from an illness that results in hair loss. Penn Newman is organizing a hair drive, and in April 2010 (exact date TBD) we will be holding an event where we will have hair stylists from the area providing haircuts for anyone who is interested in donating 6 or more inches of hair to this wonderful cause! It can be hard for people to have such a drastic hair cut, so it makes it easier to do it with others. For more information contact Stephanie Scott, Mary Kate McKnight or Elizabeth Kopec.

Relay for Life
Spring 2010 (Date TBA)
Relay for Life is the American Cancer Society's signature event and is held at Franklin Field. For the past several years, Penn Newman has had one of the most successful teams for fundraising! The night features opportunities to celebrate survivors, to remember those lost to cancer, and to fight back against this disease. Basically, it's a huge party with fun, games, entertainment, and friends, to celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to cancer, and raise money for research and ACS programs.
Check back during Spring 2010 for more info or contact Bridget Barrett at bbar@nursing.upenn.edu.
Bingo
Spring 2010 (Date TBA)
What could be more Catholic than Bingo? Newman students annually hold an evening of fun complete with food and prizes. Proceeds help defer the operational and student program expenses of the Penn Newman Center.
